I arrived at Hartley's late in the afternoon on Friday - closer to supper time. So she thought it would be nice if we went into town for dinner. We drove into the quaint town of Onancock - sort of an artists community with all kinds of little independent shops. We had a good dinner and then took advantage of 2nd Friday - an event where all the shops stay open in the evening hours. There was wine and cheese but we passed on those.
We visited one antique shop that was absolutely loaded with old architectural salvage items - mantles, columns, barn wood, old signs, windows and doors. If I had had my trusty utility trailer with me, I could have brought home all kinds of treasures. I did buy this little copper kettle and tiny stool. The stool is newly made but it was too cute to leave behind.
So you can get an idea of how small they are, I took a picture with my cell phone propped against the stool.
Here are some random pictures from my visit with Hartley.
This is Toby - Hartley's beautiful collie. He's about 4 years old now and so well behaved.
Hartley's house - it was built by Pete's grandfather many years ago.
Barn kittens that you can't get near...
Pete turning out the horses Sunday before church....
Peppie - a boarder...
Sirita - one of Hartley's Arabians.
Peppie with Peeper - another of Hartley's Arabians.
Hartley and me. Hartley was ready for church and I was already sweaty and dirty after 30 minutes of cleaning the barn - it was hot!
A pretty garden with a hand made crooked fence - a neighbor's place...
Pretty hay bales I saw on the way home. (They weren't Pete's.)
One of the main things I wanted to do while I visited was to clean the barn. I know - I'm weird. I never get tired of the smell of horses, straw and leather. We ran out of time so I didn't get to do very much. I told my friend I'd be coming back when the weather is cooler and spend an entire day in that huge, 12 stall barn that is mostly empty now. Oh the memories I have from that barn.
I hope you're having a nice Labor Day weekend. One more day and then back to work.
ttfn...

I missed this post. Work is keeping me busy and sometimes I just get home, like today, and don't want to do a thing. Yet here I sit, waiting for the washing machine to finish. It's 9:30 pm and I am so ready for bed. I thought I had started the washing machine much earlier but turns out I didn't. oops! Anywho ... looks like you had a nice visit with Hartley. That Toby is absolutely precious! And the little town with shopping in the evening sounds nice ... I definitely would NOT have passed up wine and cheese. :) The house and the horses are beautiful.
